TIME - CULTURE INTERSECTION
In Kyoto’s Gion district—where deep history and diverse cultures intersect—OAO has opened its first store in the Kansai area “OAO HAUS KYOTO” Located on the eighth floor of a commercial building that has watched over the city’s daily life for more than half a century, the space offers sweeping views of Yasaka Shrine, the Kamo River, and Minami-za Theater from its interior windows. It is a place where one can feel Kyoto’s atmosphere—where culture and nature coexist and quietly breathe—while sensing the expansive flow of the city. The space is composed of Kyo-kawara, traditional roof tiles that were actually used in Kyoto homes over many decades, and yakisugi, cedar from Yoshino in Nara—an area with deep historical ties to Kyoto—carbonized by flame. Lavishly incorporating these materials, the space dynamically connects Kyoto’s historical landscape with the futuristic vision presented by OAO. It opens up a new perspective within the city of Kyoto, where past and future intersect and diverse cultures blend together.
DESIGNED BY DAIKEI MILLS
OAO HAUS KYOTO was designed by DAIKEI MILLS, the architectural firm led by Keisuke Nakamura, who is known not only for creating a wide range of spatial designs but also for spearheading new cultural movements such as “SKWAT”—an initiative that temporarily occupies VOIDs in the city (underutilized facilities or social gaps) and opens them to the public.
“We sought to derive the significance of OAO establishing a shop in Kyoto from the land itself, its historical context, and the inherent forms of the materials. One of the elements that defines Kyoto’s historical landscape is kawara roof tiles. By reconstructing the kawara actually used in Kyoto’s traditional townhouses and transforming them into fixtures, we created tile roofs that can be divided and reconfigured, offering flexibility according to the situation. Combined with walls and benches built from yakisugi, the entire space extracts and reframes Kyoto’s landscape—becoming a place where new layers of time will continue to accumulate.”
