DRIFT is an installation that translates the shifting seasonal colors of Kyoto into space.

In autumn, Kyoto is transformed by the deep reds of its changing leaves. Echoing this landscape, the interior of OAO HAUS KYOTO is covered with red mōsen felt, while a succession of translucent red fabrics floats overhead.

A quiet expanse of red spreads across the floor, while another red above remains in constant motion, stirred by light, air, and the movement of people. By bringing together mōsen, a textile long used in traditional Japanese spaces, with a contemporary material that drifts lightly in the air while allowing light to pass through, two expressions of red—each carrying a different sense of time—coexist within a single space.

As the fabrics overlap, their depth of color and contours shift according to the viewer’s position and the changing light. At times, they appear as a single plane; at others, as continuous layers of color. Like autumn leaves moving in the wind and transforming with the light, they never settle into a fixed form, but continue to drift through the space.

DRIFT captures a landscape in which a single color shifts across time.

Autumn leaves coloring the city, traditional mōsen felt, and translucent fabric suspended in the air—elements inherited from the past meet those reinterpreted through a contemporary sensibility. Gently dissolving the boundaries between them, the installation brings together the layers of time accumulated in Kyoto and the landscape OAO envisions for the future, unfolding them throughout the space as one continuous field of red.
